Based on Abraham Maslow’s theory of necessity hierarchy, Douglas McGregor’s X and Y theory as well as contemporary motivational theory, the meaning of motivation is the underlying reason for an individual’s actions. A person is said to have high motivation can be interpreted as having a very strong reason to achieve what he wants by doing his current job. In contrast to motivation in a sense that develops in society that is often equated with passion, such as the example in the conversation “I want my child to have high motivation”. This statement can be interpreted as that the parent wants his child to have a high spirit of learning. Therefore, it is necessary to understand that there are differences in the use of motivational terms in society. Some interpret motivation as an excuse, and others interpret motivation as the same as passion.
In the relationship between motivation and intensity, intensity is associated with how vigorously a person strives, but high intensity does not produce satisfactory work performance unless the effort is associated with a favourable direction of the organization. Rather the latter element, perseverance, is a measure of how long a person can sustain his efforts.
Understanding Motivation
Before we discuss motivation more deeply it is worth understanding in advance the meaning of the word motivation. According to Kartini Kartono motivation becomes a motivation (driving force) to someone to want to do something.
The motivation in each person is not the same, it is different from each other. Therefore, it is necessary to know and understand the nature of motivation, as well as the techniques to create situations so as to generate motivation / encouragement for them to do or behave in accordance with what is desired by other individuals / organizations.
Steps to motivate yourself
Your current position is the result of actions you’ve taken in the past. The happiness and success you have today is the fruit of your past labour. If at the moment you are not in the position you want, then you must act every day, regularly and specifically.
The success and happiness we all have as a result of our steady actions, rather than random actions such as the determination we try to achieve at the beginning of the year (so that those determinations lead back to the end of the year).
Not all successes we have are the result of our habits (regular actions). Therefore, it is necessary to develop good habits if we want to achieve success.
It is a pity that the majority of our habits are not the result of thorough thoughts and reasonable decisions. In general, the habits we have are the reactions of our own experiences. If we have negative experiences, we tend to have negative reactions. So what do we have from negative reactions? It’s bad habits.
One tool that you arbitrarily use to help control your habits is the level of your motivation. If you have a motive to work, then it is the desire to achieve success that will help you overcome the fear of failure. A person who is 100% motivated will be willing to step out of his “safe zone” and seize every opportunity to change his life. They become better people, they do more things, and so they get more.
Here are the steps to help you develop your level of motivation:
-
Set goals
You have to know what you want! It is the goals that will give your life a purpose to live. The desire to achieve those goals will become a driving force in your life.
Write down all your goals, big or small, about yourself, career, finances, and spirit. Write down clearly and specifically and start implementing those goals.
-
Take action every day
Once you’ve set your goals, come up with a plan to take at least one step a day, big or small. Maybe it’s a phone conversation, reading a book, writing a letter, etc. do something every day. Each of these small steps will bring you closer to your goals as well as motivate you to rise higher. Keep in mind that the habit is also nothing more than a repetitive action. Every day action will form a habit of your success so powerful that you will eventually act without having to think anymore, because it reflects yourself – a successful and always motivated person to work.
-
Link any positive emotions to your actions
We are not creations of pure reason, but emotional creations. If reason helps us to come up with a work plan, it is the affection, the desire to implement it. Link any positive emotions to your actions. Every time you achieve success, big or small, feel the moment and feeling that you are getting closer to your goals. These repetitive connections will reinforce the desire to achieve goals. Another useful way is to sit down and write down the positive reasons why you want to achieve a particular goal. Then on the other side, write down things that you will ignore or be forced to do if you do not achieve that goal. Now, use both the kind of cravings and fears you have.
-
Take responsibility!
Don’t give yourself an excuse and stop blaming parents, childhood, children, spouse, the economy, bosses or anyone else. Because this is actually YOUR life. Don’t say to yourself “if I can, I will.” but say, “I can and I will…”. You may have plenty of reasons to hesitate but only you can change the circumstances. So, take responsibility. Stand up and remember Oprah Winfrey’s words, “my philosophy is that you are not only responsible for your life, but doing your best in the present moment will help you stand in the best position for the next moment”.
